Barbecue Sauce

makes 1 cup (2 tablespoons per serving) · prep time: 5 minutes cook time: 15 minutes

Barbecue sauce seems to be one of the first condiments to go when people switch to a low-carb lifestyle. That is because traditional barbecue sauce recipes and store-bought brands are loaded with sugar. Well, I am putting barbecue sauce back on the low-carb table!

ingredients

• 1 cup tomato sauce
• 2 tablespoons powdered erythritol
• 1 tablespoon salted butter
• 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
• 2 teaspoons onion powder
• 1½ teaspoons liquid smoke
• 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• ¼ teaspoon sea salt
• ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

directions

1.Combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
2.Taste and add more salt, if desired. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

tip: For a more molasses-flavored barbecue sauce, use 1 tablespoon of brown sugar erythritol instead of the powdered erythritol.
